Approximately twenty-five thousand homes in south-east Queensland woke up experiencing outages on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms swept through the area, generating strong winds hitting over 100 km/h.

Substantial Frozen Precipitation and Widespread Damage

Homeowners witnessed large ice chunks as large as 7 centimeters in some areas. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that multiple regions across Queensland had been impacted by large hailstones.

Response teams were working to restore power throughout the affected regions, with approximately seventy teams activated to manage the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victorian Storm Challenges

At the same time, nearly 1,000 energy customers in the southern state also encountered energy failures after the metropolitan area recorded its wettest day in 18 months.

State Emergency Services handled over five hundred emergency reports across the area, mainly for structural issues but also for downed trees and flooding.

Moist weather were predicted to continue along much of eastern Queensland this next several days as a atmospheric system continued to draw in moisture against the coastal areas.

Tuesday was predicted as the wettest day, with ongoing severe weather risk expected across various areas of both states.

Health Warning

Public health experts cautioned that there was an higher risk of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the countryside regions, specifically given the ongoing climate situation.
