New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police issued surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
