Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
