In a significant military action, Ukrainian forces have employed long-range Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil processing facility. This strike was carried out Thursday, according to the Ukrainian military authorities.
Details of the Strike and Military Significance
The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was reportedly hit, with multiple blasts observed at the site. This marks not the first instance where Ukrainian forces has deployed these powerful British-supplied missiles against objectives inside Russian soil.
Ukrainian officials emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk plant acts as one of the primary suppliers of fuel products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in providing for the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
Political Discussions on the Conflict
In a related development, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held “very good” discussions with representatives of former US President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation focused on potential pathways to end the war.
“It was a very productive conversation: many details, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a messaging platform. “There are some new ideas on how to move toward real peace closer, and it concerns approaches, potential summits, and, certainly, the schedule.”
Judicial Proceedings Within Russia
In a parallel domestic matter, a Russian court has found guilty a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the Left Front movement, was sentenced to six years in prison.
The charges reportedly stem from an article Udaltsov published in support of another group of activists charged with forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has denied the charges as fabricated and, after the sentencing, stated his intention to go on a hunger strike in defiance.
International Detainee Case
Russian authorities indicated it is engaged with French authorities regarding the fate of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a prison term in Russia and allegedly facing new charges of espionage.
An official stated that Russia has presented a proposal to France regarding Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is monitoring the situation, with all government services working to provide consular support and advocate for his liberation as soon as possible.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was destroyed in a 2022 Russian airstrike while many civilians sought refuge in its basement, is set to open its doors again. Russian occupation authorities have heralded the reconstruction as a symbol of recovery.
However, former actors from the theatre have called the reopening as “dancing on bones.” The reconstruction is part of a broader Kremlin effort to present its administration in seized territories, a process accompanied by the detention or expulsion of dissenting voices and property seizures from local residents.
The theatre is due to reopen by the month's end with a show of a classic Russian story, having been rebuilt largely anew over the past two years.
