Harsh Winter Weather Systems Take 5 Lives in Gaza Amid Desperate Living Situations in Makeshift Shelters.
Powerful winter winds caused walls to collapse onto fragile shelters sheltering people displaced by conflict in Gaza, killing at least four people. This tragedy highlights the perilous situation that persist after over 24 months of devastating bombardment and severe shortages of aid.
Truce Provides Little Relief from Harsh Weather
Although a truce has been active from last fall, aid groups report that Palestinians do not have the sufficient shelter required to withstand frequent cold-weather events.
Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the victims, said on this week that the dead include two women, a girl, and a male adult.
In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a one-year-old boy died of extreme cold during the night.
"The world has allowed us to witness death in every possible way," said a family member after the burial. "It’s true the bombing may have paused for now, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."
Relatives Buried in Shelter Collapse
As per Shifa hospital, three members of a one household — 72-year-old a man, his 15-year-old granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall collapsed on top of their tent in a area near the sea of the city. At least 5 others were injured in the incident.
Their relatives on that day began removing the debris that had entombed their loved ones and reconstructing the temporary homes for survivors.
Humanitarian Efforts and Ongoing Emergency
