French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to start stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader urging him to support the initiative and stating there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have rarely intervened to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative states officers will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a major step forward, following a short-lived shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister departed from office.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats before they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adjust to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
