Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
An recent term surfaced a few months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, per insights from health professionals including paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for physicians to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal in numerous doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.
An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Reported Truce
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that violations are continuing. The Israeli government rejects these accusations, consistent with how it refutes everything it is charged with. Yet as young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, apparently, is what international harmony resembles.
The contest, notably prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
