Battlefield 6's Casual Playlist Ignites Intense Debates Over Bots, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a new playlist called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode mirrors the standard Breakthrough format but includes a few key changes:
- Each team includes just eight real players, with the rest filled by 32 bots.
- Actions performed by real players grant complete experience points, while bot actions provide lower rewards.
- Just a pair of maps can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State map.
- Elements like Player tags, achievements, and career stat updates are disabled.
In short, the playlist lives up to its name: it's a laid-back take of Breakthrough. On the surface, you might think there's nothing wrong, since it provides more options for players looking for alternative methods to have fun with the game. But, gaming history have taught us anything, it's that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, many BF6 fans are upset.
Community Responses: From Fury to Support
"People want real players. Don't repeat the errors of your competitors," reads one reply to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing idea," comments a different user. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player remarks, "I have no idea where we are going with this game," and someone else details everything they consider to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this bot mode."
However, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's very fun to warm up, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," reads a forum post. "The community fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and don't play this title all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," states a different comment. One reply on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is great for me," while another praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Constructive Concerns and Player Feedback
All that said, players have valid points to complain about Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have pointed out that it will make wait times more extended for other modes because of the sheer number of playlists currently available. Similarly, certain regions already encounter mostly bots in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a required amount of real players, despite it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Lastly, a major grievances is that Battlefield Portal was promised to offer full XP, even against bots, but that was removed when they attempted to eliminate bot farms from the system. So this new playlist seems like the player base compromising halfway, as per a Reddit comment. A different user labels this addition as the devs "making a mistake significantly, I had so much fun in the initial release, what prompted them to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Will Changes Occur?
Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything to date with Battlefield 6, it is that they're listening and acting on feedback. Assignments being too difficult were adjusted rapidly, as did the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, should analytics shows this new playlist isn't performing to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
